Bagaduce River: Public Access to Shorefront

WHAT: A 58-acre property on the Bagaduce River with a right-of-way for pedestrian access from a parking area off Route 15. Located in Sedgwick, this property includes nearly 2200 feet of frontage on the east shore of the Bagaduce River. The interior is forested and offers additional diverse habitats, including a stream draining a small wetland and the uplands on the south side of the property. The southwest corner falls within a bald eagle nest zone mapped by Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

WHY: The Bagaduce River holds significant wildlife values as well as serving as a recreational resource. Over the last few years it has become subject to heavy development pressure. Among other wildlife features, it is one of the few sites in this area where horseshoe crabs seasonally breed. It also offers prime waterfowl and bald eagle habitat. While other conservation lands exist along the more westerly sections of the river, opportunities to conserve land in the stretch south of the Reversing Falls Bridge have been rare. Our Trust is thrilled to protect a significant length of the little remaining undeveloped frontage on the river in Sedgwick that can provide public access to this local resource.

HOW MUCH: $23,000 to cover stewardship costs, including funds to develop and manage public access infrastructure (a parking lot and trail system), and an addition to our Stewardship Fund, as required by our acquisition policy to cover long term management costs. Title to the 58-acre property was generously donated to our Trust by the landowners.
