Land Conservation

Blue Hill Heritage Trust works with willing landowners to identify and conserve tracts of land throughout the Blue Hill Peninsula that have special ecological, natural, agricultural, scenic, cultural or recreational value.

We use a variety of real estate tools to accomplish our conservation goals, including acquiring ownership of land through gifts or purchases and holding conservation easements (permanent restrictions on the future use of property) on privately owned lands.

Current Projects

We are currently pursuing a number of exciting opportunities – at Blue Hill Mountain, the Bagaduce River, Patten Stream, Jed Island, and other places of special conservation significance.

Accomplishments

We have protected for public use a rich tapestry of unique landscapes, from unspoiled shoreline and boulder-strewn blueberry fields to pristine ponds and fertile farmland.

The Blue Hill Heritage Trust has protected a total of 5,029 acres since its founding in 1985. The Trust holds conservation easements on 51 privately-owned properties covering 3,195 acres. The Trust directly owns 38 parcels covering 1,834 acres. These conservation successes are highlighted on the map below.

Recreational Lands

The Trust provides recreational opportunities for hiking and other low-impact activities. We create and maintain trails on many of our conserved properties, including Blue Hill Mountain, Kingdom Woods Conservation Area, and Cooper Farm. We also maintain public waterfront access for launching hand-carried boats on the Bagaduce River, Salt Pond, Blue Hill Bay and Morgan Bay. While you explore, please help us practice good stewardship by treading lightly.
