Why We Do It
Blueberry covered hills, open meadows, working farms, bogs and marshes, forest and ponds, rocky shores, secluded coves, streams, islands, and breathtaking views—these features define the unique and amazingly beautiful character of our Peninsula. Yet our landscape is changing, in many areas rapidly. The natural places we value as a community, that define the peninsula’s character, are quietly but steadily being converted for various human uses. The beauty of this place is both its greatest asset and its greatest threat. People from all over the world want it, and are willing to pay a lot of money to have a piece of it. The challenge is to find a balance between development and conservation.
Blue Hill Heritage Trust is working hard to help balance the necessary and inevitable growth of our communities with the protection of some of the places which provide our sense of place - shoreland, wild areas, open space, recreational trails, water access, and farmland. We are taking private action for the public good, in true New England fashion, to help ensure that increasing development pressure does not result in the destruction of the natural character of this remarkable place. |
