New Patten Stream Conservation Area in Surry
WHAT: A 41-acre parcel on Patten Stream, located in the village of Surry (part of the frontage lies across from the local elementary school). The property is predominantly forested and has nearly a half-mile of undeveloped, scenic stream frontage. Patten Stream has wildlife, recreational and historical values. It was noted in the Surry Comprehensive Plan as one of the town’s important scenic resources. The acquisition also includes a right-of-way from Route 172 for public access for recreational purposes.

WHY: The frontage along Patten Stream is surprisingly undeveloped along both its east and west sides from Patten Bay to Lower Patten Pond. The 41-acre parcel on its east side is part of a large block of undeveloped land with tributaries draining wetlands with important plant and animal habitat values into Patten Stream. The current project would protect a highly scenic stretch of Patten Stream and expand the public access opportunities that BHHT lands provide in Surry. It also has the potential to stimulate additional stream front protection.
HOW MUCH: The total cost of the project is $165,000 which includes the acquisition costs ($150,000) and, as required by our acquisition policy, an addition to our Stewardship Fund to help cover long-term management costs.
